361 TO 391 YONGE RETENTION
Project Description: PDI was contracted to complete the abatement, demolition and heritage retention system works for the YSL project located at the SE corner of Yonge and Gerard. The scope of work included the full demolition of buildings 367 Yonge Street; 369-371 Yonge Street; 373-375 Yonge Street; 377 Yonge Street; 379 Yonge Street; and 381 Yonge Street. The buildings located at 385-391 Yonge Street and 363-365 Yonge Street required demolition/heritage.
The structural steel retention system was designed specifically to wrap around the corners of Gerrard and Yonge Street, which was then held in place by 5 ton precast ballast blocks. The structural steel was built in tower sections, with each section then being lifted into place by a crane. The tower systems were then tied into each building in a custom fashion due to the different construction of multiple building heights, designs, and materials. The foundations of the steel retention system were comprised of precast blocks and a poured concrete system to create a level surface to mount the steel structure along Yonge Street due to the sloping grades running North to South.
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
“The Terminal 1 job was the project that was a turning point for us in being able to bid larger projects without being afraid of actually doing them.”
