YONGE AND SOUDAN – 2161 YONGE ST DEMOLITION
Located in the middle of a densely populated urban setting, the demolition of 2161 Yonge St. in Toronto demanded the utmost in demolition engineering, technology, and equipment. At the Southeast corner of Yonge/Eglington, 2161 Yonge was a 9 storey post-tension building, which was immediately adjacent to a sidewalk, live traffic, and was nearly touching the neighboring buildings.
The main access road to the south, Sudan, was limited to one way traffic, so not to impede with the surrounding residential neighborhood. PDI performed a complete demolition and abatement of this structure, including all sidewalk protection, engineering, and the crushing of concrete material on site to act as backfill for future works. The demolition was performed in a top-down method, to not interfere with any existing traffic. PDI re-shored the existing structure, following the asbestos abatement and removal of interior finishes to allow smaller machines to sit on the top floor and hammer the existing structure.
PDI performed the demolition with no lost time injuries, worked ahead of the project schedule and diverted 98% of all materials from landfill. PDI received positive feedback from both the surrounding neighbours, and the customer for the cleanliness of the site, the speed of the demolition, and the limited disruption.
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
Dedicated to environmental stewardship, PDI recycled and salvaged 98% of the materials from the site.
