LAKEFRONT CONDOS, 500 LAKESHORE

The project site was situated at the busy downtown intersection of Bathurst and Lakeshore in Toronto. Logistically, this project called for strategic demolition methodologies as it fronted roads on two sides, new condos on the east side property line and was built before the Gardiner Expressway (the raised highway that is the main artery in and out of downtown Toronto). The former grocery distribution block was renovated to allow for the Gardiner Bridge columns to be built.

PDI used a combination of hand and machine demolition. A crane was utilized to carefully lift and remove building sections. With help from the crane, the bays of the building closest to the street were demolished with great care and control. This allowed safe working room for the 850 High Reach.

PDI’s in house engineer along with our sub-trade Western Mechanical, focused on a methodology that allowed the bridge to be rolled off of the existing piers to minimize the risk of debris falling in the waterway, and to give easy access to PDI’s equipment at the shoreline for material separation.
